Aug 27 Celebrating Ciaran & Kaitlyn

The wedding was magical. 

The venue was amazing, the agenda perfect, the weather blessed us after days of rain, but most importantly, love shone above all else. There have been so many obstacles for these two over the last 11 years, and today they got to say to the universe, “we win, love wins”.

My makeup was ruined as my sister Heather walked my niece Kaitlyn down the Irish green grass to the music of a harp to greet the love of her life, Ciaran. The celebrant was Ciaran’s best friend from childhood. Ciaran and Kaitlyn exchanged personal vows, tears and laughter in front of about 50 guests. 

The ceremony was followed by about 2 hours of ‘barn time’ where a traditional Irish band played, yard games were set up to be played by guests (with champagne in hand), and the wedding cake was cut. The bride and groom had a pretty competitive game of Connect4 going! 

When ye old dinner bell was rung, we were off to the supper hall for the toasts and dinner. The meal was amazing. 

Then we were dispatched to the grounds to explore and take photos and to allow guests to take their children to the cottage where the nanny awaited with games and cots while the dinner hall was reset for dancing. Avery asked to be called back to dance to her favourite Taylor Swift song. Her dad retrieved her, she tore up the dance floor and then asked to go back to the nanny suite. Too much fun awaiting her return!

Some dancing, some Guinness (new 0.0 alcohol from a special tap and tastes like the real thing!), traditional fish and chips and more desserts at 11:00 pm, some more dancing (and limbo thanks to Megan and Miguel) and the night was over for these old folks! It has been a long time since we attended an 11 hour wedding celebration. OK, perhaps we have never attended a whole day wedding celebration!

The wedding party, their parents, and a few family members rented stone cottages for the night on the property so they continued the celebration until the wee hours with a family breakfast planned for the morning. As they continued the party, we headed back to our cottage about 15 minutes away.

Let the Countdown Begin!

This adventure began months ago with the wonderful invitation to attend the wedding of our niece Kaitlyn and her fiancé Ciaran in Northern Ireland. We can't wait to celebrate with them in Ciaran's home country and the birthplace of my grandpa. We will join family, including our children, at the wedding celebration in Ballymoney and toast to a lifetime of happiness for these amazing young people.  Then we move on to England to meet up with friends to travel together through Western England and Wales before we conclude our trek in Paris and drag our very tired selves home. We are in training now, walking as much as possible, to increase our stamina. Perhaps we should buy some Guinness and beef up that tolerance as well😉 We can't wait to share the adventure with you. Sept 9-11 The Cotswolds

Sept. 9 saw us relocate from Stratford to Stow-on-the-Wold.  Stow-on-the-Wold is Cotswoldian for “All the restaurants are closed.”  We must have been a pathetic spectacle, wandering from one inhospitable venue to another like an elderly band of latter-day Oliver Twists, seeking any edible scraps we could find.  Alas, two restaurants were closed for staff functions, the one in our hotel was hosting a private function, and a bunch more were shuttered because it was the twenty-fifth Monday after Groundhog Day,  or something.  We came very close to resorting to Chinese take-out, but were rescued when a second grovelling at our hotel, the King’s Arms, landed us an  8:00  slot.  Phew! Speaking of the King’s Arms, this is a hotel that has to be experienced to be appreciated.  It’s probably our favourite inn so far, and we’ve had some good ones.  The building is roughly 500 years old, but our room is spacious and very comfy.  The interestin...

Sept 12 Weathering Oxford

There were no locusts today.  We are at least grateful for that. It was a day that produced every possible weather condition short of snow, and conveniently stuffed them all into the two hour time window that was our guided walking tour of Oxford.  Hail, thunder and lightening, torrential rain, bright sunshine…. we got all of it, along with temperatures that seem better suited to November. Luckily, our tour guide, Alex, was extremely knowledgeable and engaging, and so we were willing to persevere despite the conditions.  Alex was willing to persevere because he had an umbrella. We learned that Oxford is not one school but actually 39 different colleges.  We learned of the origins of Alice in Wonderland, Narnia, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings, all conjured by denizens of Oxford.  We learned that every one hundred years the students of Oxford have too much to drink and then march around searching for a nonexistent duck.  It all seems a bit inglorious and...
