Sept 1 Welcome to Cymru (Wales) 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

We made it to Cardiff following our wonderful time in Bath. The drive was mostly without incident thanks to excellent and patient driving skills of Don and in spite of the questionable navigation skills of Debbie. I think I have finally identified my dilemma with roundabouts and my GPS lady (which I have to name before this road trip ends) is that when they say take the 3rd exit, you shouldn’t count the entrances into the roundabouts. Who knew? There should be training for that sort of thing! I don’t get how roundabouts in this country can be so confusing, and on a freeway no less. Give me access ramps any day! Well, I will say things got decidedly better in Wales where they paint the motorway number on the pavement of the lane you should be in. How very civilized!

When we arrived, we found our accommodation to be a beautiful Victorian home on Cathedral street in Cardiff. It was beautiful, filled with charm and china tea services. We asked if the proprietor wanted our licence plate number to confirm our parking and his very dry response was “we don’t do bureaucracy here”.  The place would have been perfect if we weren’t on the top floor with very steep stairs and no lifts. We knew there were no lifts in our accommodations but were ever hopeful at least once we wouldn’t be on the top floor!

We immediately headed off to Cardiff Castle which didn’t disappoint. From the massive long castle wall topped with carved stone animals, to the Keep (which we climbed) to the beautiful rooms where King Charles met with the first minister of Wales after a memorial service in Wales for Queen Elizabeth.

Then it was off to explore the sights and sounds of Cardiff. What a vibrant and interesting place. We learned the history of love spoons which are individually carved by many artists in Wales and given as tokens of love and appreciation. They are beautiful works of art.

Just walking the beautiful neighborhood was a treat for all of us except Chris who seems to be feeling more poorly as each day passes. We are off to the pharmacy to see if we can’t fix him up!😷

9 animals were completed in the 1880s and the rest by 1892.

  1. Was that Lincoln House where you stayed? It sure looks like where we stayed in Cardiff. Give Chris our best and we hope he starts improving. Nothing makes a holiday worse than not feeling up to par. We are enjoying your photos and narrative as it recalls many of our memories of our time there.
